Submission guidelines

High Desert Journal is a forum for literary, visual and journalistic artists to contribute a deeper understanding of the landscape and people of the interior West. We accept poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, memoirs, letters to the editors, books reiews, essays on social issues and conditions of the region, interviews and visual arts. High Desert Journal is looking for quality work that illuminates the landscape, the people and the relationships between the two. We accept work from residents of the interior West working with any theme, and from anyone living outside of this region creating with an element or theme of the interior West.

We review submissions year round for spring, fall, winter and summer issues. The deadline for the fall issue is June 30; winter is September 30; spring is December 31, and summer is March 31. Please send queries for book reviews. You may submit up to five poems; a maximum of 5,000 words of fiction and nonfiction; up to 3,000 words of interview, memoir and essays, and up to five slides or digital images of artwork.

With all submissions please include a cover page with your title(s), name, address, phone number and email address if available. We ask that you number all pages, allow 1-inch margins all around each page and indent new paragraphs five spaces or half inch. We do not return manuscripts or poems, but will return photos, slides and disks of artwork if a self-addressed stamped envelope with the appropriate postage is included.
